Info:
I decided on the drive home from A-kon '10 that I wanted to do this costume with the group. That gave me less than two weeks to put everything together. The dress is a thrift store find ($2.00!!) that I modified from a hideous 1970's loose frock with a high neck and long sleeves into the tighter strapless dress. The arm bands and bracelets are made from layers of fun foam that have been treated with Modge Podge and then painted with multiple layers of Rub 'n' Buff. The smaller details were painted on with puffy foam paint and gave everything a wash of dilluted black paint to make the shapes stand out. The jewels are all either salvaged from my previous Ai costume or bought from craft stores. The earrings are crafted from a light weight foam clay similiar to the Crayola brand (its actually better than the crayola clay, but I can't recall the name). The details were laid with hot glue and then everything painted with Rub 'n' Buff. The neck piece is also made with craft foam with a skeleton of floral wire on the underside to keep everything shaped properly. I made a few mock up stencils first to make sure everything fit properly, cut out the shapes from the stencil, traced everything to the foam, then cut out all the tiny shapes in the foam. I'm still finding microscopic slivers of foam sticking to things. The neckpiece was treated and painted the same as the arm bands, the details are also painted on with puffy foam paint. The head piece was a last minute addition. I didn't like the character's barely visible band around her forehead so I strung a bunch of beads and gold pieces onto fishing line and then attatched strands of gold chain to create a symmetrical draping effect. The wig is a curly longer black wig that I trimmed and added more bangs. The contacts are "Sparkles" in gold (which don't let your eyes breath at all, so I'd advise against wearing them for longer than an hour or so).
